Japanese Edo Period Carved Stag Antler Kiseru Zutsu Pipe & Tobacco Case. Beautiful early 19th century stag antler carving. The pipe case is decorated with flowers carved in relief with hash marks used for contrast against the uniform color of the antler. The top of the case is decorated with a Japanese 'Mon' crest in a carved relief panel. The top of the panel forms a ruyi head loop where a cord can be attached. Beautiful, natural coloration throughout the antler. Natural break on backside of antler, original to the piece. The attached cord has a carved antler ojime with bronze center. On the other end of the cord is a tobacco pouch made of lacquered bamboo wicker. The pouch has a leather flap and appears to be lined with hide. The front of the pouch has a gold metal floral clasp that keeps the leather flap shut. There are small brass bezels where cord attaches to pouch. Kiseru zutsu, the antler pipe case, measures approx 8" long. Tobacco case measures 3.75" tall, 1.25" wide, and approx 2.75" long. Each piece of the set is in excellent condition with some minor wear to the pouch. The leather does have expected aging, no deep cracks, but some wear on edges. The lacquer also has some spots of minor loss. Please see photos for details. Shipped with USPS Priority Mail.
