Natural Fiber of SAA Paper

Mulberry paper, also called SAA is the same as the Japanese paper called WASHI. Many countries in Asia started making paper 1,600 years ago.

The Karen Hill Tribe in the neighboring mountains of North Thailand discovered the bark of tall, broad-leafed trees which grow abundantly in the mountains. This was named the "SAA" tree by the Karen villagers, while the English call it the "Mulberry tree. As the years went by, these tribes found many uses for this bark without having to cut or destroy the trees. When the rainy season is over, the bark of these trees naturally peel off the tree trunks. For more than a century, these hill tribes have been making paper by using only natural methods, natural dyes and by using the sun to dry, thereby conserving energy as well. Today, the tribes continue to use this bark to make natural paper by hand, without endangering these beautiful hundred year old trees.
