Vintage Jean Henry Original Theorem Painting Red Cardinal Bird  --  by a Virginia Artist  -- framed

This vintage small original painting theorem painting is being de-accessioned from our own family collection.  It was purchased in the 1990s at The Mill Street Gallery in Occoquan, Virginia (south of Alexandria).  The gallery's label is still on the back.

Over the many years that we have had Jean Henry wonderful theorem paintings in both our personal collection and in our shop inventory, this is the only red cardinal we have owned.  This very expertly done small painting of a red bird on a branch (with leaves and berries) is in a dark wood frame with a gilt inner edge.  The frame is just over 4 1/2" in both directions; the "window" is about 2 1/2" square.  The painting on velvet is under glass (so please excuse the glare and reflections in the photographs).  The back is covered by a decorative paper.  There is a zigzag metal hook for hanging.  On the frame and on the paper backing and label there is very minor evidence of age, wear and handling.  The gallery label on the back reads:  The Mill Street Gallery   125 Mill Street    P.O. Box 184    Occoquan, VA  22125  (( & the phone number )).  Just below the image of the old mill in the upper left corner of the label, there is a 1993 copyright (which helped us date when we purchased it, since we had originally thought we might have purchased it in the 1980s).

Jean Henry's body of art as a theorem artist shows a mastery of many different subjects.  Her charming folk art paintings on velvet are excellent 20th century examples (made in Virginia) of a type of traditional painting that flourished in American and England in the early 1800s.
