Coulter calls this, "a well-considered, reliable account of what an observant and intelligent Englishman saw during a three-months journey from one end of the Confederacy to the other" Coulter 175. And while Fremantle was sympathetic to the Confederacy and the enthusiasm and patriotism of soldiers and civilians, he "did not fail to record some uncomplimentary observations." Nevins writes, "Fully deserving of its reputation as the best commentary on the wartime South by an English visitor" CWB I, 91 (NY edition). This uncommon first edition preceded a New York and a very desirable Confederate edition in 1864. Dornbusch IV, 10816; Eicher 357; Howes F-361, "aa"; In Tall Cotton 64; Sabin 25832.
