Batterien und Akkus, die Schadstoffe enthalten, sind mit dem Symbol einer durchgekreuzten Mülltonne deutlich erkennbar gekennzeichnet. Desweiteren befindet sich unter dem Symbol der durchgekreuzten Mülltonne, die chemische Bezeichnung der entsprechenden Schadstoffe. Beispiele hierfür sind: (Pb) Blei, (Cd) Cadmium, (Hg) Quecksilber:
