Description:

Circular 32mm pressed tinplate badge with a celluloid face and spring pin on the reverse. This white badge has a thin red border and bears the portrait of General William Birdwood, the commander of the ANZAC (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) forces at Gallipoli Ottoman Turkey in 1915. To the left and right of the portrait in black are the words "SOUTH AUSTRALIA". Above the portrait is a rising sun in yellow and red with the words "ADVANCE AUSTRALIA". The portrait is framed by crossed Australian and English flags. Below the flags in black text are the words "HELP THOSE WHO HELPED YOU" and below that in blue "ANZAC DAY APRIL 25th 1915".  Along the rim of the tinnie in black lettering are the words A W PATRICK MAKER 440 RAE ST NTH FITZROY.

History / Summary

Fundraising badge produced to commemorate Anzac Day in 1918. Such badges were sold in trams, buses, at railways stations and at rallies to raise money for the stated cause. This example is associated with Anzac Day activities in South Australia in 1918, a ceremony then only 3 years old. The portrait of Birdwood evokes the high regard in which he was held publically. 

The term 'ANZAC' was first used in 1915, as an acronym to describe the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps in army reports. The two corps were part of the British-commanded Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, which fought against the Ottoman Empire at Gallipoli in 1915.
