SINGAPORE.
Singapore, situated on a little island at the narrowest point of the Straits of Malacca, is not only a rendezvous and a port of call for half the shipping of the East, but is a strong fortress in the hands of Britain, and an important link in the chain of defence which stretches from Tilbury Fort to Wei-Hai-Wei and Esquimalt. It stands, like Hong Kong, in the front rank among the commercial cities of the Empire.
