From the valleys and mountains of Wales, bearers of the Walsh name found a new homeland in Ireland in the aftermath of the momentous Norman invasion of the island in 1169.

Readily assimilating with the native Irish population they soon became identified with the nation’s struggle against oppression, often at bitter and tragic cost to themselves.

Assimilation with the native Irish clans and their way of life involved a number of important marriage alliances, forging these with ancient clans such as the O’Rourkes, the O’Connors, the McCarthys, and the O’Donnells.

In contemporary times, and on the world stage, New Zealand-born Fran Walsh is the screenwriter, film producer, and musician who, along with her partner filmmaker Peter Jackson was responsible for the Oscar award-winning Lord of the Rings trilogy of movies, released between 2001 and 2003.
