As traditional household guardians, foo dogs are among the most formidable figures in Chinese lore. This pair of vintage stoneware ceramic Japanese Kutani style "foo dogs", "fu lions", or the proper Chinese term "shishi" which literally translates to "stone lion" are dramatic and absolutely stunning! They have striking silhouettes with legendary mystique and timeless design. They make a strong statement and add style to any interior or garden setting. They are highly textured and beautifully detailed with gorgeous contrasting blue and reddish-copper tones. They have an alert and eager presence with larger than life characters. Their faces have a fierce look about them with glaring eyes, one snarling, and the other with fangs that show the open mouth. This threatening appearance is believed to guard against evil spirits.
They are in pristine vintage condition with no chips, cracks, crazing, visible damage or repairs. Well-taken care of museum quality treasures. Both are character impressed mark on back leg. Three horizontal Chinese characters. Unfortunately I have not learned how to read Chinese…yet!
These majestic creatures were known to have benefic protective powers and traditionally graced or guarded temples, tombs, important buildings, and homes of the wealthy. The name of Buddha in Chinese is Fo or Fu. These dogs of Fu, or, Foo dogs, were Buddha's companions and were legendary providers of prosperity, good fortune and protection. The can be found as single statues but are most off created in pairs depicting a male and a female/ying and yang. The male lion which represents the world or the home and the female representing the cycle of life or the home's inhabitants. Traditionally, the male guards the structure and the female protects those dwelling inside.
