Chuck Billy (b. Jun 23, 1962) is an American singer best known as lead vocalist of thrash metal band Testament, formed in ‘83 by Eric Peterson (guitar) & Derrick Ramirez (guitar), then joined by Louie Clemente (drums), Steve Souza (vocals) & Greg Christian (bass). Ramirez departed soon after & guitarist Alex Skolnick joined. Souza left in ’86, replaced by Chuck Billy. Their debut album The Legacy (’87) received instant acclaim within thrash circles & were compared with thrash pioneers Metallica. Testament is often credited as 1 of the most popular & influential bands of the thrash metal scene & 1 of the leaders of the 2nd wave of the genre in the late ‘80s. They are referred to as 1 of the "Big 8" of thrash metal, along with Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax, Exodus, Overkill & Death Angel. Billy’s vocal style has changed considerably over the years from a clear, high pitched thrash style to a lower register approaching a death grunt. In 2011 he was recognized in the National Museum of the American Indian exhibit titled "Up Where We Belong: Native Musicians in Popular Culture" in the Smithsonian Institution. In 2013 he became the 1st Native American to be permanently featured in the memorabilia display at the Hard Rock Hotel in New Mexico & was honored on the State Assembly floor for his positive influence on the Native American community. Testament has sold over 15 million albums!
