I find tweezers or a toothpick help when inserting the fur, hair, ashes or any other tiny ornaments that are no wider than 0.5-0.6mm in width.

Stainless steel is a great alternative to sterling silver. It is very affordable, hypoallergenic, robust and will not tarnish or change colour over time.
