New Edition is an American R&B group formed in '78 that reached its height of popularity in the '80s. During their 1st experience with fame in '83, its members were Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Bobby Brown, Ronnie DeVoe & Ralph Tresvant. Early hits included, Candy Girl, Cool It Now, & Mr. Telephone Man. Tresvant was the lead singer on most songs. Brown was voted out of the group in '85 & embarked on a solo career. They recruited singer Johnny Gill, introduced on '88 album Heart Break. They went on hiatus in '90, while members worked on side projects, such as the group Bell Biv DeVoe. Gill & Tresvant also recorded successful solo albums. All 6 members reunited in '96 to record album Home Again. During the Home Again Tour, Brown & Bivins quit, forcing the tour to be canceled. Various reunions have since occurred, usually with the '87-'90 lineup & occasionally including Brown. Their last studio album was 2004's, One Love. New Edition received 2 American Music Awards for Favorite Soul/R&B Band/Duo/Group ('87 & '97) & the Soul Train Award in '89 for Best R&B/Urban Contemporary Album of the Year (Heart Break) & again in '97 (Home Again). In 2012 they received the Soul Train Lifetime Achievement Award & In 2017 received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame & the BET Lifetime Achievement Award.
