Ringgold Wilmer Lardner 1885-1933 (aged 48). Lardner's name came from a cousin.... (who) had been named by Lardner's uncle ... after a friend, Rear Admiral Cadwalader Ringgold, who was from a distinguished military family. Lardner never liked his given name and abbreviated it to Ring, Having originated from the surname of an obscure U,S, Navy Admiral, "Ring" certainly qualifies as a very unusual given name-almost unique-and that has us convinced that it is pretty much a certainty that the inscription by John Golden: "Dear Ring, Yours gratefully. John." is to none other than his friend and contributor of a positive blurb in this very book, the late, great. Ring Lardner. (Of the authenticity of the autograph itself there is even less doubt-compare with any holographic material of John Golden's you can find online and it becomes instantly obvious that this inscription was written by John Golden's hand; of course we guarantee this authenticity in perpetuity; transferable to however many owners find themselves fortunate enough to come to possess this copy.).
