About Us
Welcome to the Polar Bear Camera eBay shop. We focus on repair and service vintage photographic equipment, based in the UK.

Each of the vintage lenses has been carefully and professionally serviced (unless told otherwise), including but not limited to fungus removal, lenses and element alignment, lubrication, calibration, and so on. We understand the hassle when buying old used lenses. Many sellers may not be aware of the gear's optical and mechanical condition, especially when the equipment has sat idle for 40 years or more.

Below are some of the common vintage lenses faults:

1. Fungus and Mould
Fungus and mould are one of the most common issues with vintage lenses. It usually starts growing from the edge of the glass, and in between aperture blades. We recommend using a torch to light through the lens, with the aperture set to wide open.

2. Stuck Aperture Blade
Stuck aperture blade is usually the result of the helicoid oil vapour or mechanical displacement. Lens stored in a hot and wet area, e.g. near radiator, or the grease deterioration are the primary reasons to cause the issues. We recommend taping the aperture control pin on the mount, switch the lens from Auto to Manual mode and vice versa, stop down the lens at different aperture settings to examine this aspect.

3. Stiff Focus Ring
By the time to time, the lubricant in the focus helicoid has gummed up. It requires helicoid cleaning and re-grease. We do NOT recommend the "hair-dryer" heat method nor "lighter-oil" method, which can lead to oil vaporisation and leakage. thus permanently damage to the lens, such as lens group separation.

We provide lenses repair and inspection service. Please feel free to reach us on eBay.
