The Schnauzer comes in two sizes - the Standard Schnauzer and the Miniature Schnauzer. The Standard Schnauzer is the oldest variation of the breed. These dogs were developed in the Middle Ages for herding purposes, but the Schnauzer as it is known today came from Germany. Standing 17 to 20 inches tall at the shoulder and weighing between 30 and 60 pounds when fully grown, the Standard Schnauzer is classified as a medium breed dog. The Miniature Schnauzer stands 12 to 14 inches tall and weighs around 10 to 18 pounds when fully grown. The Schnauzer traces his roots back to the Middle Ages. However, the Schnauzer as he is known today originated in Germany in the mid-19th century. The breed was standardized and bred for herding and working purposes.
