About these stamps:  On October 1, 1987, the USPS issued a these five stamps as part of a booklet.  These stamps paid tribute to 5 early engines that were instrumental in the development of the railroad industry in the United States.  The steam engines were named and those  shown were the Stourbridge Lion (1829),  the Best Friend of Charleston (1830), the John Bull (1831), the Brother Jonathan (1832),  and the Gowan and Marx (1839).

A bit more history: The United States Post Office issued its first stamp on July 1, 1847.  Since that time, over 5000 stamps have been released. Each stamp is given its own identification number called a Scott Number. These stamps have been designated as Scott Numbers 2366a.
