CANTIUM

Vernacule

 KENT

by Jan Jansson

Published Amsterdam circa 1650 in "Atlas Novus".

An original 17th century copper engraved antique county map of Kent enhanced with early hand colouring.

The title is presented in an elaorate cartouche featuring several coats of arms and putti.

The map is further embellished with compass roses and radiating rhumb lines. The sea area is decorated with sailing ships and sea monsters.

Some cracking and splitting along a boundary line has occurred where early pigment has "burned" through the paper. This has been repaired verso with archival tissue and rendered stable. Please see the close up of the area between Dover and Canterbury. This is amply reflected in the very low price. It remains however a most attractive map for framing and display.

Approx. 19.5" x 15" (500mm x 380mm) map area only, with margins beyond. Central fold as issued.
