INTRO
In this book we'll have a look at how the diminished chord can be used as a passing chord.
When
used as a passing chord we place the diminished chord between two
other chords, one of which is the target chord and the other an
approach chord:

There are several ways of approaching a target chord in order to prepare its arrival.
A
progression with resolving chords is is a popular way.
However,
the 'diminished passing chord'
technique is one of the easier devices to employ because of the
simple way that the target chord is approached by two chords whose
root notes move in semitone steps.
You
may want to capitalise on this aspect of chord root movement.
There
are only three diminished chords any of which are positioned between
the target chord and the approach chord to produce a 'diminished
passing chord' progression.
So let's take a look at a chord progression whose notation on the lead sheet may seem dated but whose usefulness remains relevant.
