More about this stamp:  This stamp was released in Rochester, New York on December 30, 1980 to honor Rochester native. Blanche Stuart Scott.  Always an adventurous tomboy, she started taking her father’s car out for joy rides when she was just 13 years old.  When she was 26 years old, she drove from New York City to San Francisco alone in 67 days.

Her road trip earned the attention of aviator Glenn Curtiss, who offered to give her flying lessons.  As Curtiss's only female student, she made her first public flight on October 23, 1910 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and earned the nickname "Tomboy of the Air."  She flew the daredevil circuit for six years.  After a career in movie production and radio, she became the first woman to ride in a jet.  Later in life, she curated exhibits for the US Air Force Museum.

A bit more history: The United States Post Office issued its first stamp on July 1, 1847. Since that time, over 5000 stamps have been released. Each stamp is given its own identification number called a Scott Number. This stamp has been designated as Scott Number C99.
