This principle is based on a late 19th century design, where the cup wall is very thin near the mouthpiece rim, combined with substantially more mass lower down the cup. The thin cup walls help convey sensations from the horn to the lips giving incredibly good contact between the player and the instrument. High playing and quiet entries become more secure. The mass of the mouthpiece is concentrated at the bottom of the cup. This helps the projection and gives a powerful low register. The rim is gently rounded giving plenty of endurance, but with plenty of ‘grip’ for security in the high register. The deep cup helps create a warmly romantic sound, ideal for orchestral playing.
