About this object

Pathology: Spencer Bright-Line Haemocytometer. The manufacturer has printed or embossed details: 'Spencer Bright-Line Haemacytometer. No 87755'. The glass tray equipment is embossed with "Bright-Line improved Nebauer 1/10 mm deep Patented". Includes 3 x papers plus instructions. 

The contents of the case include two glass pipettes, manufactured with a bulb in the straight calibrated length, each has a small section of rubber tubing and glass funnel mouthed section. A polished and frosted glass rectangle is housed in the centre. 

The case has brass hinges and two front fastenings, covered in red embossed pattern vinyl with gilt title on the exterior of the lid. The purpose built interior and recess is lined with red velveteen material. The original printed paper information is missing.

Haemocytometers are used to count blood cells. Although there are several ways to count blood cells, the most commonly used was the Spencer Bright Haemocytometer. The thin, semi-transparent lines on the glass surface, stand out as bright lines against the grey background, hence the title Bright-Line Haemocytometer.
