Originally called the Mosquito Inlet Station because of the swarming insects, this lighthouse was completed in 1887. Standing 167 feet high, the tower is one of the tallest in the U.S. Abandoned by the Coast Guard in the 1970's, the site is maintained by a local preservation group as one of the country's most complete and beautiful lighthouse statins.
