The story opens with machines being implanted in an open skull by an unknown figure. The lobotomized figure has the image of the Phoenix burning in his eyes.

Wolverine gives an eulogy for Professor Xavier, Alexander Summers visits his brother in jail, and Captain America offers Havok an opportunity to join the Avengers.

Scarlet Witch and Rogue have a physical dispute at Professor Xavier's grave. While Red Skull instructs his new team of super-humans to steal the body of Professor X.
