In times of plague, specialist doctors were employed to treat the sick. Many wore a protective costume consisting of leather robes, hat, and gloves, and a distinctive mask with a bird-like beak and goggles. The mask was filled with fragrant herbs and scents as a protection from disease. Wooden canes were helpful in examining victims of the plague and to keep others at bay. surrounding the doctor are rats, who carry the disease and spread it to humans through fleas.
