Jane Gardner Batten [1909 1982], commonly known as Jean Batten, was a record setting New Zealand aviator who began her flying career in the early 1930's. Batten learned to fly in England and immediately set off to break numerous aviation records. In 1934, she became the first woman to fly solo from England to Australia, followed by an endurance flight of 61 hours from England to Brazil. Her most famous flight was from England to New Zealand in 1936, a record that would stand for 44 years. In 1937, she completed her last record solo flight from Australia to England. Listed for auction is a commemorative First Day Cover signed by Jean Batten. The cover contains an attractive ink cachet of Batten and is signed ''Jean Batten'' in blue ink. The cover is postmarked, stamped, measures 6.50 x 4.60 inches, it has trivial wear otherwise is in fine condition. The cover will be accompanied with an original vintage b/w news wire [6.00 x 8.00] photograph of her at the conclusion of a flight she completed in October of 1937. The autograph is authentic and will display nicely with the vintage photograph.
