Background:
Singapore Airlines (abbreviation: SIA or SQ) is the flag carrier of the
Republic of Singapore with its hub located at Changi Airport, and a member of
the Star Alliance. The airline is notable for highlighting the Singapore Girl
as its central figure in the corporate branding segment. Widely renowned as one
of the best carriers, airline is ranked as a 5-star airline by Skytrax, and it
has also been ranked as the world's best airline five times. The airline
operates a variety of Boeing and Airbus aircraft, including the A350, 787, 777,
A380, and 737.
The Airbus A330 is a wide-body aircraft developed and produced by Airbus.
Airbus conceived several derivatives of the A300, its first airliner from the
mid-1970s. Then the company began development on the A330 twinjet in parallel
with the A340 quadjet and launched both designs with their first orders in June
1987. The A330-300, the first variant, took its maiden flight in November 1992
and entered service with Air Inter in January 1994. The slightly shorter
A330-200 variant followed in 1998.
Powered by two General Electric CF6-80E1, Pratt & Whitney PW4000, or
Rolls-Royce Trent 700 engines, the 63.69 m (208 ft 11 in) long ā300 has a range
of 11,750 km (6,350 nmi; 7,300 mi), typically carries 277 passengers with a 440
exit limit and 32 LD3 containers. It received European and American
certification on 21 October 1993 after 420 test flights over 1,100 hours. The
ā300 entered service on 16 January 1994. The A330-300 is based on a stretched
A300 fuselage but with new wings, stabilisers and fly-by-wire systems.
