Xaver Terofal (born January 20, 1862 in Dorfen as Franz Xaver Terofal [1] , Upper Bavaria ; died April 4, 1940 in Schliersee ) was a German actor and theater director.

Terofal came from a family with French roots and was born the illegitimate son of the winemaker Franz Xaver Zelzer (* 1837) and the unmarried pharmacist's daughter Josepha Anna Terofal (* 1841, † 1871). His biological father married Walburga Daniel (* 1842) in Dorfen in 1864. His grandparents Karl Terofal (* 1806, † 1868) and Maria Anna, née Schwaiger (* 1807) settled in Dorfen in 1830, took over the pharmacy there and had 10 children together. His great-grandparents, the secretary of the French legation in Munich Carl Laforet, who settled in Munich around 1800 with Elisabeth Christina née Proels, changed the family name to Ananym Terofal. The frequently expressed opinion that Xaver Terofal's birth name was "François Xavier Laforet" is therefore incorrect.

From an early age, Terofal was interested in music, dance and, above all, theatre. At his father's request, he first had to complete an apprenticeship as a butcher in Isen . He also worked in this profession for some time and soon - with the support of his father - was able to lease several inns in Dorfen , Halfing and Munich . Terofal staged music and theater evenings there.

Xaver Terofal's grave in Schliersee

In Munich , Terofal was able to make his debut as Schuhplattler at the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz . There he became friends with court actor Konrad Dreher . Terofal was successful all round, so that in 1891 he was able to purchase the Hotel Seehaus in Schliersee . Shortly afterwards, together with his friend and colleague Dreher, he founded the Schlierseer Bauerntheater . With this ensemble he toured extremely successfully through Germany, Austria and Switzerland . He also directed and took over sole management of the stage in 1905. In 1894 he toured America and also played in theMetropolitan Opera .

Terofal was married to Anna Terofal, née Motzet, from Isen . His daughter Anni Terofal married director, actor, film producer and screenwriter Franz Seitz . The grandson Hans Terofal was also an actor. the grandson Franz Seitz junior director, actor, film producer and screenwriter.

At the age of 78, Xaver Terofal died on April 4, 1940 in Schliersee and was also buried there.

Agnes Sorma (17 May 1862 – 10 February 1927), born Agnes Maria Caroline Zaremba, was a German actress. Some sources give 1865 as her year of birth.

Early life

Agnes Maria Caroline Zaremba was born in Breslau, Province of Silesia, Prussia (now Wrocław, Poland).[1] A street in Breslau was once named Agnes-Sorma-Straße in her honour, but when the city was transferred to Poland after World War II, the street was renamed to Ulica Heleny Modrzejewskiej after Sorma's near-contemporary, the Polish actress Helena Modjeska.

Career

In 1884, having performed in regional theatres, Sorma was invited to join the Deutsches Theater in Berlin, as a character actress. Sorma was perhaps best known for playing Nora in Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House, beginning in 1894.[2] She played Nora in Paris in 1899, where a critic marveled at her interpretation of the character: "Sorma has no need to resort to the tricks and devices of the art of acting; she had but to live and to reproduce that nature which she had assimilated to her own personality," concluding that "a great performance like hers dissolves all criticism into praise, and the highest tribute of all is speechless admiration."[3] She also played Nora in the United States (1897),[4] Italy, Austria, Belgium, Greece, and the Netherlands, and was the first actress known to play the character in Istanbul.

Other stage appearances by Sorma were roles in The Sunken Bell, Der Strom,[6] Liebelei, The Taming of the Shrew, Diplomacy, Chic, Hero and Leander, Die Konigskinder, Mädchentraum, Cyprienne, and Morituri.[7][8][9] Many of her performances in New York and Chicago were given in German, for German-speaking American audiences.
