More about this stamp:  In 1988, the USPS issued this commemorative stamp to celebrate the 350th anniversary of the New World settlement of New Sweden by Swedish and Finnish colonists. The area known as New Sweden is mostly in today's Delaware and New Jersey.

This lovely stamp was issued simultaneously by the postal services of Sweden, Finland, and the United States and was the first three-nation joint issue in which the U.S. participated.  This stamp was in fact so popular that it was sold out from the US Post Service in 5 days!

A bit more history: The United States Post Office issued its first stamp on July 1, 1847. Since that time, over 5000 stamps have been released. Each stamp is given its own identification number called a Scott Number. This stamp has been designated as Scott Number C117.
