Byodoin Phoenix Hall is an Amida Hall built by Fujiwara no Yorimichi in 1053.
It is a masterpiece of Heian-period architecture, sculpture, and craftsmanship, and a national treasure.
It is said to have been built on the middle island of the garden pond, facing the east, and is said to have been modeled after the Buddhist paradise in the west.
It has been called "Phoenix Hall" since the early Edo period because of the pair of gilt bronze phoenixes on the roof and, according to one theory, its appearance as if the phoenixes were spreading their wings.
The statue of Amida Nyorai, the principal image enshrined in the hall, was created by Sadacho, one of the most famous Buddhist priests of the Heian period.
Many of the buildings in the temple complex were destroyed by fire due to repeated disasters, but the Ho-o-oh-do Hall was miraculously spared.
In 1994, it was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as one of the "Cultural Properties of Ancient Kyoto.
Heisei Repair was completed in 2014 (Heisei 26).
