Grit blast abrasives are used to clean and prepare substrates prior to painting/coating or
repair. Extensive testing has shown that 'glass grit' (recycled glass particles) is capable of
performing as well as, or better than, traditional abrasives.
Available in a variety of grades, glass grit is quickly gaining acceptance and approval. It
offers an excellent way for contractors, specifiers and clients alike to show their
commitment to environmentally responsible working practices.
Main benefits:-
Non-toxic, inert material avoids respiratory and environmental problems.
Chloride and salt-free, leads to less corrosion on prepared surfaces.
Ability to cut and/or clean many different surfaces efficiently.
Lower disposal costs.
Copper slag, a widely used abrasive for shot blasting, is a waste product of the copper
smelting industry. As copper is no longer smelted in the UK, it is imported from
continental Europe to be crushed and processed here. In addition to the environmental
costs of shipping the material to the UK, there are also serious concerns about the heavy
metals (copper, nickel and lead) present in the slag and the impacts these could have on
environmentally sensitive areas, such as aquatic habitats. These concerns are reflected
by the regulations covering the disposal of the material. once used as a shot blasting
abrasive, copper slag is classified as a 'special waste'. There are strict rules about how
the spent slag must be handled which increases it's disposal costs. Recycled glass grit is
free of heavy metals and toxic contaminants. As a result it's disposal costs are usually
lower because spent or used glass grit is not automatically by itself considered to be a
'special waste'.
