More about these stamps:  The US Post Office issued this 10-cent airmail stamp in 1949.  Printed in violet, it celebrates the 75th anniversary of the Universal Postal Union.  The Universal Postal Union (UPU, was established by the Treaty of Bern in 1874.  After the foundation of the United Nations in 1948, the UPU became a UN specialized agency that coordinates postal policies among member nations, in addition to the worldwide postal system.  The UPU's headquarters continue to be located in Bern, Switzerland.  This stamp shows the Post Office Department Building in Washington, DC.

A bit more history: The United States Post Office issued its first stamp on July 1, 1847. Since that time, over 5000 stamps have been released. Each stamp is given its own identification number called a Scott Number. This stamp has been designated as Scott Number C42.
