About these stamps:  In 2003, the US Postal Service issued the 26th stamp in the Black Heritage Series.  This 37c, self adhesive stamp, honors Justice Thurgood Marshall.  A native of Maryland, Marshall became the 96th Justice of the Supreme Court in 1967 and was the first African American Justice.  During his distinguished career as a lawyer, he served as counsel to the NAACP.  He successfully argued, before the Supreme Court, Brown vs Board of Education, which ended segregation in US public schools.  The Baltimore Airport as well as many schools and institutions have been named in his honor.  Shortly after his death in 1993, he was awarded, posthumously, the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Bill Clinton.

A bit more history: The United States Post Office issued its first stamp on July 1, 1847. Since that time, over 5000 stamps have been released. Each stamp is given its own identification number called a Scott Number. This stamp has been designated as Scott Number 3746.
