More about this stamp:  This stamp was issued in 1947 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of one of the greatest inventors of all time - Thomas Alvin Edison.  Edison literally changed the world with his inventions, most notably the gramophone, the incandescent light system, the megaphone, an energy storage battery, the electric valve, and the talking motion picture.  He also founded the company General Electric and installed the first central electric light and power plant in New York City between 1881 and 1882.

A bit more history: The United States Post Office issued its first stamp on July 1, 1847. Since that time, over 5000 stamps have been released. Each stamp is given its own identification number called a Scott Number. This stamp has been designated as Scott Number 945.
