A scarce 1st edition, published in 1896, of this crime mystery novel from English novelist Fergus Hume (1859 - 1932), known for his detective fiction, thrillers and mysteries.  His self-published debut novel 'The Mystery of a Hansom Cab ' (1886) was the biggest-selling mystery novel of the Victorian era, and was a key inspiration for Arthur Conan Doyle in creating Sherlock Holmes, who was introduced the following year, in 'A Study In Scarlet '.






'Tracked By A Tattoo : A Mystery ' published by Frederick Warne and Co. in London in 1896, 1st edition, 8vo (7.5in x 4.75in), 316 pages, of which the first 2 are press quotes for his book 'The Carbuncle Clue ', which had been published earlier in 1896.






Bound in original publishers cloth, decorated in Art Nouveau-style and lettered in black to the front board and in gilt to the spine.  In overall at least good+ condition, tightly bound, worn and frayed spine ends, light wear to edges and corners, fading to spine, the book has a degree of lean.


Internally in at least good+ condition, no ownership inscriptions (light dealer pencil notes at front endpaper), solid hinges, pages are generally clean and tidy with toning to outer edges and an occasional light spot/grubby mark, very tanned endpapers, several points within where guttering is weak/webbing visible, small chunk missing from front endpaper.

A copy of this book in a variant (faded) green cloth which was in less attractive condition - red stains to the cloth, slightly cracked hinges, foxing throughout and a missing front endpaper - sold on Ebay at an accepted offer on the listed price of just over £350 on 21 January 2023, per this listing
