General Alexander Archer Vandegrift [1887 1973] was a prominent Marine Corps General well remembered for his leadership during World War II, who was awarded the Medal of Honor and was appointed as the 18th Commandant of the Marine Corps by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. General Vandegrift began his military career in 1909, and was a veteran of the Banana Wars and the Mexican Revolution. During World War II, he was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions and leadership during the Solomon Islands campaign. In 1944, he was appointed as the 18th Marine Commandant and was the first Marine to hold the rank of four-star general while on active duty. Listed for auction is a vintage United States released Marine Corps photograph signed by General Alexander Archer Vandegrift. The photograph is a formal military portrait of the general which is dedicated and signed as follows, ''with all good wishes A.A. Vandegrift Lieut. gen. U.S.M.C'' in blue pen. The photograph is a b/w which measures 8.00 x 10.00 inches and is ink stamped on the verso. The photograph has trivial surface/edge wear otherwise it is in fine condition. The autograph is authentic, signed on a very desirable image and is wonderful example of this prominent Marine Commander and is ideal for display.
