JOHN le CARRÉ, DOYEN OF SPY THRILLER WRITERS, used a made-up word to describe this book. He said it was "unputdownable". The book that so intrigued the master of intrigue is about Baron Otto Gustav von Wächter, a senior Nazi, and how he managed to wriggle out of the clutches of the Allies after World War II.

Von Wächter was a Viennese lawyer, high-ranking officer in the Nazi SS, a colleague of Heinrich Himmler, administrator of a ghetto in Poland during the war and Governor of Galicia which is now mainly in Ukraine. He was indicted as a war criminal for the murder and displacement of Jews and Poles but eluded his pursuers - eventually ending up in Rome where he died before he could escape to Argentina. Was he poisoned?
