An original 18th century copper engraved antique sea chart of the Bristol Channel with the coasts of North Devon, Cornwall and South Wales. 

Enhanced with attractive later hand colouring this would make a handsome map for display.

Covers the "The Severn or Channell of Bristoll" and includes Bristol, Kings Weston, Bridgwater, Minehead, Porlock etc in Somerset. Then westwards through Ilfracombe (Ilford Combe), Barnstaple, Bideford, Appledore, Lundy Island, Hartland Point etc in Devon and then Bude, Boscastle and Tintagel in Cornwall. The Welsh coast includes Chepstow, Newport, Cardiff, Barry Island, Swansea, Tenby, Caldy Island and Newton.

A fascinating and detailed sea chart with a dedication to Sir Robert Southwell surmounted by a fine coat of arms. Enhanced with attractive later hand colouring.

An engraved view lower right celebrates the occasion of Sir Robert Southwell hosting a visit by King William III in 1690.

The detail includes soundings, anchorages, shoals and rocks as well as settlements ashore, including individual buildings. 

A crisp dark impression on robust hand laid paper, with central fold as issued, blank verso.

Fine condition other than a small patch of browning on the lower centre fold and minor blemishes elsewhere as shown, free of repairs or restoration.

Approx. 24" x 20.5" (640mm x 520mm) overall. Printed area approx. 22" x 17" (570mm x 450mm).
