Antique Large Mettlach Villeroy and Boch Beer Stein/Pitcher #1927 Relief Reeds c.1889

Description: Large and beautiful Mettlach pouring beer stein model number 1927 was manufactured by Villeroy and Boch in 1889. It is decorated with elaborate relief in tan saltglazed stoneware on gray textured surface with enameled insides. Beautiful, very precise and detailed relief work of the most famous ceramics manufacturer..

The main decoration is made of tan clay slips over a gray textured surface and shows a Cupid face with the inscription:

Sei's schäumndes Bier,
Sei's perlender Wein,
Eines wünsch ich dir,
Trink beides stets rein.

Be it foaming beer,
Be it pearly wine,
I wish to you,
Drink both always pure.

Please note that this stein model was made in several sizes with different slips and several different sayings. This is the largest (2L) pouring stein with the slip decorated with bunches of reeds - the ones that called bulrush or cattails. I don't know what exactly the cattails plant symbolizes but it was a main motif for several early Mettlach steins - namely 1111, 1727, 1926 and 1751.

The stein is fully marked at the bottom with incised Mettlach Tower mark and mold number 1927. There is also a date mark 89 for the year of production 1889.
The lid is pewter - this model comes with pewter lid only.

The stein is very large and impressive -  it stands 12.5" tall to the top of the thumblift, 2 L capacity.

Excellent condition with clean interior and tight sitting lid.
