Vintage Oval Glass Paperweight Grand Mademoiselle 17th Century Beaubrun

Louis XIV’s rebellious cousin, Marie Louise d’Orléans, Duchess of Montpensier, was referred to by the title “Grande Mademoiselle”. Granddaughter of Henry IV and cousin of Louis XIV, La Grande Mademoiselle was born in 1627 at the Louvre. She was intimately acquainted with life behind the scenes at the royal court. Heir to a great fortune, she even tried to engineer a marriage with Louis XIV. During the Fronde she sided with her father against Mazarin’s government. Exiled to Yonne, she spent several years away from court before moving back for good in 1664.
