Mexican Feather Art Picture Exotic Bird Folk Handicraft Framed Carved Wood.

This original feather artwork depicts an exotic bird with a colourful plumage in its natural habitat of a tropical rainforest. A rich palette of featherwork in scarlet red, orange, yellow, pink, blue grey and charcoal grey is enhanced by viridian green, indigo blue, chrome yellow, cochineal red, coffee brown and mustard yellow of watercolours. It is reminiscent of bird and flower motifs painted on amate paper by Nahua artists in Guerrero.

The unique artistic technique dates back to the golden age of intricate featherwork plumaria crafted by amanteca during Moctezuma's reign, and feather mosaics from the first century of colonial era. In Toltec and Mexica cultures feathers were prized like venerated jade and turquoise. They symbolised fertility, abundance, riches and power, and were associated with a feathered serpent Quetzalcoatl, a deity of life, light and wisdom.

The feather art painting is in good vintage condition (please see the pictures).
