  Leland Cade was born in 1925 on the family homestead 20 miles north of Lavina, Montana.  After graduating from high school in 1943, he spent a year in the Army infantry and a year in the horse cavalry.  After graduating from Montana State College in 1950, he worked as a county extension agent in Montana and Alaska.  In 1969, he became Montana editor of the Montana Farmer-Stockman, a farm-oriented magazine, headquartered in Great Falls and later Billings.  He married Janet Elliott of Ft. Benton, Montana, in 1953.  He and Janet have two children Randall and Valine.  After retiring in 1987, he began work on this book, and also spent considerable time working on the Montana Agricultural Center and Museum at Ft Benton.  His hobbies include collecting antique farm machinery, photography, woodworking, writing, and playing the accordion and hammered dulcimer.
