Description:

FULL TITLE: Franckfurt mit der gegend auf 2 stund

Publication: Atlas Curieux oder neuer und compendieuser Atlas ..., Augsburg, circa 1704.

A 300 year old tourist map and guide of the countryside approx. 10 km. around Frankfurt am Main. The first known written reference to Frankfurt was penned in 794 by Charlemagne, who promoted the city to one of his royal residences. Frankfurt had been established as a trading centre since Roman times. The engraving shows the twin fortified towns of Frankfurt and Sachsenhausen straddling the river and surround by cultivated fields. Numerous roads radiate from the City, with the area to the south heavily wooded. Fold(s) as given.

The stunde is a unit of distance defined to be 4800 meters (2.983 miles), approximately the distance a person can walk in an hour. The definition is consistent with the custom everywhere of informally adopting time units as distance units, as when we say 'I live 10 minutes from school.'

Scarce.
