DESCRIPTION & USE

3M High Intensity Prismatic reflective tape (or HIP) is a retro-reflective, micro-prismatic tape designed for high-visibility in low-light and nighttime conditions. It has a visibility of up to 1000 feet when reflecting a light source (such as car headlights). It’s also incredibly durable with a lifetime of up to 10 years before needing replacement.  Its tough top-coat resists scuffs, scratches and gouges even in extreme climates so it’s virtually weatherproof. You’ve undoubtedly seen a wider version of 3M HIP on those large, interstate highway signs. Over 85% of state transportation departments use only 3M reflective material for their traffic signs because it’s a superior product to all other brands: superior visibility, superior reflectivity and superior longevity.

3M HIP isn’t just limited to static items on the road. It’s ideal for moving ones as well. Use it on all vehicles for greater visibility at a distance and much earlier detection. Place 3M HIP reflective tape around warehouse docks to make sure truckers hit the mark (and not your door). Place it on dumpsters so vehicles don’t back into them. Use it at the marina to make peers more visible. Place it on your boat to be seen early from a distance (unless you’re a smuggler and don’t want to stand out. Use 3M HIP on just about anything you want to be clearly noticeable from a distance during both daytime and nighttime. 3M HIP is great for your home, too. Place it in your garage on floors, doors and walls to avoid collisions while back out or pulling in. Use it in your home to increase visibility on railings, stairs, floors, baby strollers, bikes, bike accessories, camping/outdoor equipment, boats, automobiles, motorcycles and more. Once you see how well 3M HIP works, you’re sure to find unlimited uses for it.

While 3M HIP reflective tape is a semi-rigid with a thickness of about 12 mils, it is flexible enough to adhere to contours, like those on motorcycle and bicycle helmets. It will also easily loop around and adhere to objects with small diameters, like bicycle or motorcycle frames. 3M HIP reflective tape can also add plenty of sizzle to your signs or graphics. It can be easily cut with scissors, plotters or razor blades to form letters & shapes that are visible from long distances.

GRADE SCHOOL / SLOW YOUR ROLL

These rolls of 3M reflective tape are from 3M’s 3900 series of reflective material know as High Intensity Prismatic (HIP). You’ll know it’s HIP from the short, vertical bar pattern on top of the tape’s diamond/chain-link pattern (see third picture in listing for a close-up of patterns on HIP tape). Don’t be fooled by other sellers passing off lower grades of 3M reflective tape as higher grades. 3M Engineer Grade (non-prismatic) or EG reflective tape will have a model number in the 3200’s. 3M Engineer Grade Prismatic or EGP reflective tape will have a model number in the 3400’s. 3M High Intensity Prismatic or HIP will have a model number in the 3900’s. 3M High Intensity Prismatic Diamond Grade or HIP-DG will have a model number in the 4000’s. Ask potential sellers for the four-digit, 3M model number for the tape they’re selling. If the model number doesn’t match the grade, then don’t buy it. The difference between these grades (other than the price) is visibility and durability. While 3M EGP & 3M HIP are retro-reflective, 3M HIP has about 25% better visibility from a distance, up to 1000 feet visibility under normal conditions.
