Description Exotica is a musical genre that was popular during the 1950s to mid-1960s with Americans who came of age during World War II. The term exotica was coined by Liberty Records founder Simon Waronker, and the musical colloquialism means tropical ersatz, the non-native, pseudo experience of insular Oceania, Southeast Asia, Hawaii, tribal Africa, and many other locales. Exotica's popularity injected new life into the aging tiki bar scene, bringing new, younger customers into bars and lounges that have been around for decades. Los Angeles' Club Exotica was a new club that jumped into the fray to create a new exotica lounge experience that not only included the Polynesian decor, exotica music, tropical drinks, and a Caribbean menu, but one upped the competition. With a house band and dancers in various states of undress providing entertainment, plus topless waitresses, Club Exotica brought a naughty edge to tiki culture that Angelenos really enjoyed or at least they did for about a decade before the bottom fell out of the tiki scene, and they closed up shop.
