This half hardy annual ornamental rice is great for any sunny garden spot. From spring until frost, it sports gorgeous pointed, upright, elegant green leaves streaked and shaded with burgundy-purple. They look great in the vase, too.

Reaching about 16 inches high and half as wide, Black Madras forms a neat, dense, fountain-shaped plant that looks great for months and months. It’s perfect in containers as well as the garden, and makes the ideal mass planting for waterside areas.

Sow the seeds indoors in spring at 22C. Press them into some good quality potting compost and keep moist. Keep seedlings indoors until all risk of frost has passed. Or sow direct in late spring.
