DESCRIPTION

Very scarce to see as a set.

Volumes I to VII, originally running to a total of fifty volumes. For the years 1754 to 1757, with two volumes bound in each volume, with each volume spanning one half of the year, a total of fourteen volumes bound in seven.

Volume I is illustrated with one folding plate.

An extensive bibliographical work on the sciences and fine arts, containing essays on a wide variety of cultural subjects reflecting on the developments of the day and important historical events.

Subjects include the government of the Roman Republic, choice letters of Popes, the life of Grotius, the journal of the voyage of the Grand Cair, metapsychics, a voyage to Egypt, the history of dance, fish and crabs, religious missions to Paraguay, and more.

Bookplate of George Baillie to the front paste downs. Baillie was a Scottish politician, sitting in both the Parliament of Scotland and in the British House of Commons. Under George I he was appointed as one of the Lords of Admiralty, later elevated to Lord of Treasury. His wife was the songwriter and poet Lady Grizell Hume.


CONDITION

In a full calf binding. Externally, a little worn, with rubbing to the boards and spines. Volumes I and III are lacking the spine labels, Volume II lacking part of the spine label. A small amount of loss to the head of the spines of Volumes II, IV, V, VI, and VII. Light bumping to the extremities. Surface crack to Volume II. Cracks to the joints, a little heavier to Volume I. Light marks to the boards. Bookplate to the front paste downs. Prior owner's ink inscription to the verso of the front endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are age-toned and with some scattered spots. Folding plate in Volume I is torn with one segment detached but present. Leaf R2 of the index of Volume II is torn with no loss. Very small chip to the title page of Volume VI.
