Weight Tape is a thick, durable, vinyl coated fiberglass tape that accurately estimates the weight of pony or horse in hands or kilograms..
Monitoring weight targets:
Every farmer should have a weight measuring tape so that heifers can easily be measured and managed. It is a very simple operation to carry out and should be done every few months or when heifers are brought in for handling i.e. dosing, TB testing or vaccinations. Weights should be recorded and comparisons made against targets.
How to measure
Time to pull out the measuring tape!
Most blankets are measured in inches, with average horse sizes ranging from 12''-91’’ or 5 hands - 22:3 hands. To find your horse’s size, start at the center of your horse’s chest and run a cloth tape measure down his side to the point of the buttocks (where the ‘cheek’ meets the tail). Include the widest part of his shoulder and keep the measuring tape level and taut. This will be your horses true size (note: some blanket brands run a little large or small.)
SWEET TIPS:
When using a weigh tape, position the tape according to the manufacturer’s directions.
A flexible measuring tape is preferred.
Be calm, don’t rush in. Make sure the animal is comfortable with the measuring tape.
