Education

Cheder and yeshiva studies
1936-1939 Vilna Academy of Art, drawing and applied art.

Haim Savitzky was born in the year 1907 in Baranovitz, White Russia.
His childhood and teenage years were dedicated to extracurricular religious studies, during which his artistic talents were first discovered. These talents were expressed in the painting of the innocent faces of his fellow “Cheder” pupils and later on in the Yeshiva.
By the age of nine, he had already accomplished the painting of the twelve Zodiac signs on the Baranovitz Great Synagogue walls; while standing on scaffolding which had been erected especially for the occasion. The basics of painting he learned in Vilna, where he studied together with Moshe Bernstein and Reuven Miski.
Savitzky illegally immigrated to Israel as a Zionist pioneer on the boat “Draga” and began to make a living as an agricultural worker in the Rehovot orchards.

Later, he opened a knitting mill, became a building contractor and established an office for the planning and design of trade exhibitions. He designed several exhibitions in Israel and overseas, such as the French and Romanian pavilions for international trade fairs.
After 20 years in the business world, he returned to art.

Savitzky's work is mainly figurative and impressionistic in style, and it is said of his works that they are “colorful combinations” and usually figurative; the subject matter is viewed in an original perspective and sometimes kaleidoscopically in awakening warm colors.

He is best characterized by paintings of his family home, hometown, musicians, Jews at the hour of “Tashlich” – repentance, synagogue and wedding prayers.
In addition to this, Savitzky also paints harmonious views and facial portraits of women. Critics say of Savitzky and his works that they succeed in finding a colorful harmony which relaxes the viewer.
Amongst the collectors that have purchased his works is the President, City Council of Philadelphia, Mr. Paul D’Ortona and the Mayor of New York, Mr. Ed Koch.
