  2. This is a vintage reproduction of the Nishiki-e ukiyo-e ``Abalone Tori'' by the Edo period ukiyo-e artist Kitagawa Utamaro.
  3. This is a series of three nishiki-e paintings.
  4. Each one depicts an abalone diver resting on a rock, an ama diver nursing an infant, and a female customer and an ama diver.
  5. Utamaro Kitagawa was active as a painter of beautiful women in the late 1700s, the golden age of Ukiyo-e in the Edo period.
  6. Utamaro painted prostitutes, courtesans, and teahouse girls. The Edo shogunate often imposed restrictions on Utamaro's paintings as disturbing to the public, but Utamaro countered with hanji-e paintings and continued to paint pictures of beautiful women.
  7. His work is highly acclaimed worldwide today.
