Ceylon "True" cinnamon is a common term for the Cinnamomum Zeylanicum, a plant that native to Sri Lanka (Ceylon).

Nowadays Cinnamon is used not only as a food component. Because of its numerous health benefits it is widely used in pharmaceutical preparations as well as in the cosmetics industry. The active ingredients of the bark contain antiseptic, antibacterial, antiviral, antispasmodic, and antifungal properties and is good for general health.

 

It is valuable in the treatment of a wide range of illnesses. It is prescribed as a remedy for diarhea, indigestion, nausea and vomiting. It is also recommend for asthma, menstrual problems and backache.

·    Ceylon True ALBA grade cinnamon is NOT the spice available in local stores and supermarkets. Commonly available product are Cassia cinnamon and C grades, which are much cheaper versions mostly coming from Indonesia, China, India, Vietnam region and Java region.

Difference between Ceylon ALBA grade True Cinnamon and Cassia Cinnamon

1. Ceylon True Cinnamon sticks are light brown in colour, they are thin and has a softer appearance. Whereas cassia has a dark brown colour, hard and thick sticks.

2. Ceylon True Cinnamon, or real cinnamon from Ceylon is composed of multiple layers like a cigar whereas cassia has a hollow tube and the bark curls inward on both ends.

3. Ceylon True Cinnamon has a delicate aroma but that of cassia is harsh.

4. Try tasting both, Ceylon True Cinnamon has a sweet delicate taste and Cassia has a certain hotness or spiciness.

5. Ceylon True Cinnamon contains low levels of coumarin, where as Cassia Cinnamon contains high levels of coumarin, It is not advisable to consume large amounts of Cassia Cinnamon. A person daily consuming sizeable amounts of Cassia-type cinnamon, it increases the risk of potential toxicity problems.
